Mississippi finally voted to legalize hemp in June 2020, meaning the crop is relatively new to farmers in the state. The Mississippi Hemp Cultivation Act legalized hemp cultivation and directed the Commissioner of Agriculture and Commerce to create a state hemp farming plan. However, lawmakers didn’t allocate the necessary money needed to implement a hemp program, leaving the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to oversee hemp cultivation in the state. As such, the USDA is in charge of issuing hemp grower licenses for Mississippians.
Andy Gibson, the commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC), has stated that should the state decide to start funding the hemp program in the future, the MDAC will request to be the licensing agency. For now, though, hemp licenses must be obtained from the USDA under the U.S. Domestic Hemp Production Program.
The introduction of a hemp farming program is exciting news for Mississippi’s CBD industry. But right now, the program is in its early stages, with farmers still learning to navigate the ins and outs of growing and selling the hemp crop, let alone creating CBD products. This means that the CBD for sale in Mississippi is unlikely to be made from “home-grown” hemp.
Instead, the CBD oil in Mississippi tends to be made from imported hemp. To ensure the highest-quality CBD possible, it’s important to find brands that use American-grown hemp, as we do here at Pure Kana. We have partnered with some of the most well-respected and knowledgeable hemp farmers in the U.S. to ensure the CBD and other cannabinoids and terpenes extracted from these crops are top-notch.
